Continually Improving My Blog's Template

/ Thursday, April 16, 2009 /
In my free time the last few days I've been working significantly on tweaking my blog's template to maximize the viewing space for posts while making a navigation menu to make things a little easier on eye. I think I've done some good things; check it out and let me know.

Along those lines, these updates to the template are a part of my grander scheme to make my site more professional and pleasing to potential contacts I may make in the future. In one way I plan on upping the professionalism by organizing my posting a little better. In another way I plan on cleaning up some of my older posts that are not quite appropriate for publication anymore. Until now I've written on this blog about a broad spectrum of personal events, interests, and thoughts; I'm looking now to split up this site by it's main theme's and place some of those themes on a different site strictly devoted to those idea's. For now the only significant change will be my bowling information and commentary. In the future I may start working on a separate site for my financial related commentary but that is another job for a later date.

I have created a new site called Mounts Bowling where I've copied over all of my bowling posts to. Soon I will be deleting the bowling related posts on this site and editing down some of my older posts that touched on bowling as well as other less appropriate topics and opinions. After all I started writing on this site back in 2004 and much of what I wrote back then is not very interesting and/or professional either.

I do still plan on documenting much of my life here however so posts in the style of the the past couple years will likely continue into the foreseeable future.

Test Post from Windows Live Writer

/ Friday, March 13, 2009 /

This evening I just downloaded Windows Live Writer as it has been highly touted on the web to be a fantastic tool for blogging.  Seeing as though I write a fair amount online I figured I’d give it a try.  Funny thing about this post however is that I’m not going into detail on any of the wonderful things I’d like to say here on my blog.  For instance I’m going on vacation next week and will be visiting Vegas, USBC Nationals, In-Laws, and taking a weekend cruise with the wife.  I also am working on an asset allocation model for my retirement accounts that I would like to document here on this blog.  I also finished another book which I’d like to review and I’m contemplating changing my methodology for tracking my monthly stock selections.  All of these will take up complete posts on their own in the coming days… at least hopefully but until then I guess this will have to do as a test post and glimpse into the future.  Now, I guess I’ll see about testing some of the media functionality of the program… please bear with me.

We're Staying at Caesars Palace!
Not too long ago I Mentioned I was finishing up my MBA.  Well I’d like to say I am that much closer, just 7 1/2 weeks to go!  I can’t wait.  I’ll have to start working on my big final paper for class ten however in Vegas.  Not good timing at all if you ask me.  This is not a place to be doing school work…

Anyway, that’s all I’m going to say right now.  It’s late and I have to go to bed.  I’ll play with this more tomorrow.  Good night Windows Live Writer and good night blog.

Looking Back On 2008

/ Friday, January 30, 2009 /

My dad was 28 years old back in the summer of 1980. He had been married for a couple years already and had finished up both college and seminary. He was about to take his first church on full time way up in the frigid tundra of South Dakota. That summer I was born and I don’t remember any of it. But what I do know is that 28 years later, in the summer of 2008, I celebrated my 28th birthday with my wife for the very first time. We didn’t (and still don’t) have any kids, nor have I or she finished grad school but my life, right now, is in the arena that my father’s was when I was born. This is the first year of my life where I felt as if I was on par with my father for the first time. He was always (for as long as I’ve known him and have been alive) a grown-up while I was still a kid.

Looking back on 2008, now that it’s a pinch behind us now, about four weeks and a couple days to be precise, I am proud to say that my first year as a married man was a really good year. I know I have a history of lamenting on my good years every January or so and spouting out my eternal optimism for the coming year but I don’t feel bad about that because so far I feel that every year has truly been better than the year recently ended.

2008 not only was my first year as a husband. Flor and I also adopted 2 cats and became quasi parents of two little ones named Esther and Fred (Freddie).

We even took advantage of the horrendous economy and market conditions of the times and purchased our first home, a small one bedroom condo out in El Cajon, just East of San Diego. Flor and I even endured about 26 days of separation in the summer due to a school term she had to attend in Washington DC and we experienced our first ever phone bills exceeding our allotted monthly minutes. :) We ogled the capital together with my sister and road tripped the United States all the way back to San Diego.

After returning home I would have made my Grandfather proud surely by becoming the handyman that that he would have admired. I’m sure he would have loved helping me and Flor fix up our place. Having said that however, I think maybe he might have helped us out some way along the way anyhow, who knows. We painted walls, patched holes, changed light fixtures, installed hardware, and as the year turned we even fixed our ceiling and roof (minor repairs mind you, nothing to get too exited about). 2008 even brought with it my return to school as I did the bulk of a Master’s program between my regular work and bowling excursions. And Flor’s schooling has made great progress and makes me so proud to call her my wife. She started going to the hospital once every couple weeks shadowing doctors and seeing real patients. She’s so cute in that white coat. :) I swear she’s going to make a fine doctor, one of those doctors that everybody loves, the kind that seem to love what they’re doing.

All in all Flor and I had a remarkable year in 2008. Sure retirement accounts fell precipitously, as did everybody’s, and there were stressful times at work and at home but the smiles and happy times were much more prevalent. We even found ourselves peering into the small little eyes of a new baby nephew and received word that another nephew/niece is on the way. Flor’s family has been blessed with little ones and we’ve had the good fortune of being the fun aunt/uncle coming to town to entertain the kids. It’s been really cool to be in that spot… and then we get hand the baby back over to mom when the little guy poos. :) The point here however is that I feel like I’m an adult now and that my life is good and in order. I have my wife and all of my friends and family to thank for that because really, it doesn’t feel like I did anything to make this happen.

I hope my dad understands that though he is now twice the age (and maturity surely :)) that he was when I was born, I am now infinitely more mature than I was then, just 28 years ago… or even a few years ago for that matter. For the first time I feel like I can walk side by side as equals with my dad, and his dad, and his dad.

They were all great men and one day I hope to be a great man as well. In 2009 I look forward to all the things that might come our way. I should graduate while Flor will be spending many of her days in the hospital. Our little kitties will both turn one. Happiness and comfort should abound, and surely many unforeseen happenings will direct our lives… but hopefully with a little luck 2009 will turn out even better than 2008 and we’ll have many more happy stories to tell in the years to come.

Lest us not forget the one defining moment however. I became a man when I purchased this awesome refrigerator. :)

Considering BeyondTV in my Living Room

/ Wednesday, May 28, 2008 /
I'm giving some thought into our upcoming move. We're actually trying to think of ways to minimize our monthly expenses without sacrificing anything and the first thought that comes to mind is cable. Of course we've grown to love DVR and we are amazingly addicted to it so I'm not sure we could give it and digital cable up just to save a few dollars but I came across another option which I've been secretly wanting for a couple years now... a PC based DVR system.

Apparently I can purchase a PC TV tuner on eBay for about $70, a download for BTV or BeyondTV for about $60, and a VGA to S-Video-TV out converter off of eBay for $5 which will run directly to the TV. With this setup I can work a personal DVR from my computer for an upfront cost of $135 plus an extra optional $20 PC remote control. Doing this I can effectively drop from Cox Digital Cable to standard cable and save about $20 per month in Cox bills and break even on this investment in a mere eight months. In the mean time I can enjoy the benefits of the setup as well such as expanded DVR space, DVD backup of shows I'd like to keep, compression of shows to podcast to my Zune/iPod, compression of shows or movies to archive on my PC. Really the possibilities are limitless. I can even network the drive to other PCs and watch live or recorded TV on my laptop in bed, at my desk, in the laundy room, or out at the pool! Crazy!

Anyway, I'm really just lusting at this point and will have to look into my PC's abilities before I commit to this but I am pretty sure I can do this. So exciting! I'll have to update later when I look into this a bit more.

Sony Ericsson HCB 150 - I Want One!

/ Tuesday, February 19, 2008 /
I understand that California is going through some law changes this summer. Everybody driving a car as of July 2008 needs to be using a hands free device if they are using a cell phone. I knew this a while back so I picked up a Parrot Drivers Headset so that I could start the hands free experience while driving a little early. I didn't realize this at the time but after it arrived I found out that my ears are strangely shaped and these in-the-ear buds don't stay in my ear; they just fall out.

Flor however had better luck with it and liked it nicely, it has a nice car charging dock for it so it's always charged and always has a placed to be stored while not driving so I gave it to her. Since then however I've been in the market for a new device. I don't really care for the standard over the ear models that are meant to be portable. I'm really only in this for a car kit. I don't want to have to worry about charging it and I don't want to have to worry about messing around with attaching it to my body... which led me to this awesome discovery of the Sony Ericsson HCB 150, which won't be released until the 2nd quarter of this year. I can't wait; I've fallen in love. This do-dad is looking awesome.

Bluetooth Car Speaker Phone
It's just a bluetooth speaker phone system for the cell. It attaches to the sunshade visor in the car, has a display showing who is calling, has a text to voice recognition and will hold a charge for ever and a day. It can even link up to multiple phones so we'll be able to pair it with Flor's phone too if we ever have to switch cars. Ohh yeah, did I mention how cool it looks. Check it out:

Throwing Money Around

/ Monday, February 4, 2008 /
So last Saturday night the 2nd I did something I don't normally do. I just up and bought a new computer on a whim. Well, it wasn't just a whim. My old computer is nearly 4 1/2 years old and is starting to make a lot of weird noises and a lot of questionable errors. So in the interest in not losing all my computer contents Flor gave me her blessings and I just found one online and painfully made the purchase.

If you know me well I always hesitate making big purchases. I don't know why. I just don't want to part with hundreds of dollars. To commemorate the experiece Flor coached me on through the checkout process and snapped a few pictures for us to look back on and laugh at a few years from now. After all, the computer stats will stink in a few years:

The price will look like chump change in a decade:

And I look terrible in of all these pictures:

Anyway, everything will be laughable eventually so I guess I shouldn't sweat it... but I swear this computer seemed like a good deal at the time. :)

2007 - A Year In Review

/ Friday, January 11, 2008 /
Here's a quick synopsis of last year. What a year! It's amazing as you go about your day-to-day life you don't really see the amount of significant events unfold quite like you do when you look back on it all.

2007 ended up being a life changing year. It was full of joy and pain. I didn't even blog about everything but what I did touch on here is outlined below. I am so happy right now in my life that I can hardly express it. I look forward greatly to 2008 as it will be my first year as a married man.

---------------

January 2007 - A new year begins and I begin blogging again after a long lull. I then begin picking and tracking stocks again as I try to stay current in the business world. Finally I decide that I should make sure I'm healthy by seeing a dentist and a doctor for the first time in a long time.

February 2007 - I begin tracking all of my bowling statistics and start looking back on past NGS videos with fondness. Valentines Day with Flor went off great as did the championships of our softball league with Flor making the game winning catch. Ohh yeah, I finished my BA requirements.

March 2007 - Graduation! Decision to take multivitamins was made, as was a nice guys decision to get married. Got tired at work so I went on a vacation, Big Bear was great!

April 2007 - Tough month for the family, Grandma died but Flor got to meet my family. I did some bowling, got my first Dutch 200, and went green. Great news! I saved a ton of money on my car insurance... er, Student Loan.

May 2007 - A 299 game, a journey into Africa with my lady, and my diploma arrives. Stink! My car is broken into, luckily my first audio books weren't stolen. Cousin John leaves town.

June 2007 - Grandma's cat moves in, Kathleen visits SD, and Flor and I hit Reno & Yosemite in style. I was happy to take Flor golfing for the 1st time.

July 2007 - I bowled great in Reno and caught my cousin Jess' wedding. An important 1-year anniversary and family camp.

August 2007 - Took a trip to Dublin and Barry hits #756. Flor and I start cooking hard core stuff and I make some great cookies. How cool! My dad starts blogging.

September 2007 - Flor says yes! We take pictures and start our wedding website..

October 2007 - Fulfill lifelong dream and do some more bowling.

November 2007 - Amazingly I decide to enroll in Grad School. I'm getting an MBA and I spent the holiday with Flor's fam and with friends.

December 2007 - Christmas time again. and the wedding came so fast! The newest Mounts' celebrate Christmas together and then we spent time with family.

I'm Becoming An Online MBA Student At Ashford University!

/ Friday, November 16, 2007 /
I can hardly believe this but after 5 years of school and three years off just to go back and finish my degree I am now going back again a full year later to get a Masters in Business Administration. This will not change my working situation at all and I will actually receive financial assistance from my employer to pay for the degree so it should be great for me in the long run.

This will be a 16 month program with 100% of the classes taken online. This is of course what makes this program feasible for me as I can't very well quit my job.

I'll be starting the online MBA program at Ashford University on January 8, 2008 and will be anticipating graduating in April or May of 2009. Wish me good luck!

This means that I will have a graduate degree for at least two years before Flor gets one. That will make me feel good. :) Of course she is going to be a doctor and I'll continue as a banker so I guess she'll eventually be far more impressive than me anyway.

Well, that's all I have to say for now. Expect more pictures from me in the future as the holiday's are coming up I will have to start capturing moments again.

A Funny Picture Of Aaron

/ Monday, August 20, 2007 /
I thought I's share this picture that I took of Aaron taking a picture of my cookies last week. It's pretty amazing to see how funny Aaron looks making a beautiful picture of cookies.

I Am A Culinary Genius

/ Tuesday, August 14, 2007 /
So Saturday afternoon Flor and I were loafing around the apartment watching TV and relaxing. We were feeling pretty good about staying in all day when I suddenly got the urge to bake some cookies. Now, if you know anything about me you'll know already that I have a love affair with baked goods and cookies rank high on my "baked goods list". I don't use those nasty box mixes either I build those cookies straight from scratch.

Anyway to prohibit myself from droning on about this too long I'll just summarize from hence forth. The cookies ended up coming out of the oven in perfect condition. Quite soft but not gooey, fluffy but not towering too high, chocolaty but still leaving plenty of the doughy goodness to savor between chips. Let's just say they were perfect and they looked gorgeous!

Aaron even thought so too and later that evening after he had finished his photo shoot for the day he set up his indoor studio and took some awe inspiring shots of my cookies, catching them in all their glory.

I now present them to you with one disclaimer. There are no more cookies left. Jeremy, Aaron, AJ, Rich, Flor, and Myself killed them off by yesterday evening. Sorry to tease your sweet tooth and then leave you wanting more but some things must be the way they are.

For more of Aaron's ridiculously good photography check out his blog and portfolio. He usually photographs beautiful women but sometimes he takes a break to photograph my food.

Gourmet Cooking For Two

/ Monday, August 13, 2007 /
So I came across an amazing blog a couple weeks ago written by a woman that's been cooking for many years. She provides weekly dinner menu's for two and provides exceptionally well organized directions for cooking the meals (not just the dishes) and provides a weekly shopping list for the weeks worth of meals. All of her dishes are seasonal and holiday appropriate and they for the most part allow for no waste, spoilage, or unused ingredients. basically with the exception of buying food at the store and cooking it we're talking no work at all on my part. :)

Anyway, Flor and I decided to try a week of following her menu and directions so on Friday we went to the store and bought a whole bunch of stuff and started cooking her meals. It takes us about an hour to prepare them however it should only take about 30 minutes, I guess we're still amateurs. The meals however have been amazing so far. We're talking real nice dishes with great variety and healthiness. We've had so far Salmon, Lamb Chops, Turkey Cutlets, and tonight we're having Pork Chops. That's some good meating... er, I mean eating. :) Check it out if you're interested. It's been great so far.

Regarding Comments

/ Tuesday, July 31, 2007 /
Just a short post before bed:

On Sunday I was informed by Flor rather sternly and comically that I only allow comments on this blog from users with Blogger profiles. Well, I decided that it didn't make sense to only allow nerds to comment on my blog so now I've opened it up to everybody. Happy commenting!

Photography, Videos, and Directing The Sun

/ Tuesday, July 24, 2007 /
I try to keep myself busy. Lately I've found that I'm finding it a lot less enjoyable to just sit around the house watching TV or something of the like. As many of my friends and family can attest I have immersed myself into many other things such as a girl friend, a full time job, an awful lot of bowling, a lot of traveling, I've even had some stints of dancing thrown into the mix as well as my trip back to school this past winter to finish up my long overdue undergraduate degree (which I got by the way). I've also spent a lot of time with my business partner, friend, and roommate Aaron to do video projects for schools, musicians, churches, and weddings. But not only that but I help Aaron out with his photography business which is sort of a subdivision of NGS Media our San Diego wedding video company. What do I do in this position you might ask?

I direct the sun! I am the official NGS Director Of The Sun. I cause the sun shed light wherever Aaron needs it. :) Pretty cool huh?

This past weekend I helped Aaron photograph a model for the calendar he's working on. It's a fund raiser to benefit breast cancer awareness and the 3-Day. Here is a quality shot Aaron got of me while on the job. Just look at me! Who else could look that good while directing sun? No one.

Two Birthdays and an Anniversary

/ Monday, July 9, 2007 /
This is my current favorite picture of Flor:

In other news Flor and I just got back from Missouri last night and it was quite a nice trip. I was not feeling great at the beginning of it but by Saturday I felt great. My family went out to a Japanese sushi and steakhouse for lunch after bowling and then we all spent the rest of the afternoon preparing for Jess and Johns wedding. Fun times that I'll have to go into more in detail later. I haven't even taken the time to unpack or take a look at all the pictures from the weekend.

The previous week however was a nice vacation-like week with the 4th of July and all. Amazingly I didn't get any pictures on the 4th of July as Flor and I stayed in for the most part all day. We were tired of being in the sun so we ate with AJ Buerer at IHOP around lunch time and then went shopping for Jess's wedding present until 2:30 or so. The rest of the day we hung out at home until early evening when we met up with the Tragers and Kelly for fireworks on Coronado Island. We showed up 30 minutes before the show; the show lasted 20 minutes; and it took us two hours to get off the island after the show. Needless to say we were in bumper-to-bumper traffic not moving at all for the longest time. Flor and I actually got out of the car and sat on fold-up beach chairs next to the car for a little more than an hour. I'll be honest, we were kind of gloating as we had told the Tragers beforehand that we'd be there forever if we went to Coronado. We didn't change their mind but I'm sure they were second guessing the decision as we sat around on Orange Ave. :)

Even earlier in the week though were two big days. Sunday the 1st was Flor and myself's 1st anniversary followed by my 27th birthday on Monday the 2nd. We've had a great year to say the least and we celebrated by going and spending time at Mission Bay with Mahina and company for her birthday party. Of course later on we went out shopping and celebrating that night but we pretty much kept it low key. Pictures from the Bay follow:

The next day on my birthday I found waiting for me in my dining room a power drill; an awesome gift from Flor for my birthday. I'm starting to get the manly itch to become a "tool man" so now my collection begins. What follows are a couple pictures of me using the drill for the first time and then hanging out at league later that night. We had a great week to say that's for sure.

I guess tonight or tomorrow I'll have to upload pictures from this weekend and recap it because it was a doosy.

A Week Of Pictures

/ Monday, July 2, 2007 /
This past week has come and gone and here I am presenting the albums that correspond.

Last weekend Flor and I spent a lazy day around the house. I caught this awesome picture and a couple others of Cutie sitting on Flor.

Later that day I got bored as we never left the apartment so what did I do? I decided to shave for the first time in about 3 years. I don't know why but it was awesome. It took me about 3 days to get used to my reflection in the mirror but I started liking it. Now unfortunately it's been 8 days since the shave so I'm going to have to decide whether I'm going to grow the beard back or take it back down to the skin. I think I'll shave again tonight and go with the shaved look for a little while.

This past weekend Aaron and I went out to photograph a wedding it was a good time but I missed this awesome good time with Flor, Abby, Rob, Michele, and Taylor. Flor took over with the 2.2 megapixel Kodak relic in my absence and took these fine pictures while I helped out Aaron with pictures at the NGS Media photo gig.

Aaron has also posted a couple shots from the wedding on his blog.

That's it for now. I'll have to post our Mission bay pics from yesterday a little later. It was Mahina's birthday bash and the beginning of me and Flor's anniversary day. We had a good time.

How To Sew A Button - My First Try

/ Thursday, June 28, 2007 /
I have lived away from home for about nine years. I moved out of the house and into my college dorm room in August of 1998 and since that day I have never had to patch an article of clothing nor attach a replacement button on anything I own. There was one time that a friend of mine, Rebekah Perkins, attached a button to a shirt for me but I personally have never had to do it.

Today, things will change. I have a pair of pants and a jacket with a button on each that has fallen off and I have a pair of pants with a hole in the pocket and I am tired of putting up with it! 10 years ago if one were to want to learn how to sew a button you would have to look around for a friend to show you how; now things are easier. YouTube. What else needs to be said. I learned 3 months ago how to tie a Windsor Knot and now I've learned to mend my buttons and seams. Tomorrow my wardrobe will sing!

Derek Paravicini, a blind, autistic pianist

/ Tuesday, June 26, 2007 /
I just came across a 5-part video documentary via Healthbolt on Derek Paravicini, a blind, autistic pianist. He's incredible and he's a fascinating case study on the peculiarities of the autistic mind.

On a personal note I cannot get enough of listening to truly talented musicians and secondly I wonder what separates people like Derek from other autistic minds. My sister Kathleen works at the New England Institute for Children with a group of autistic kids, I'm sure she would be very interested in this man and how he relates to her kids.
