Experimenting With SEO

/ Tuesday, May 12, 2009 /
Today I'm going to be crafting a bit of an experiment for my topic. I met earlier today with my buddy Aaron for nuggets at our favorite Tuesday afternoon lunch spot and we got to talking about a number of things. One of those things happened to be our business and finding our business' website through search engines.

The problem as we discussed revolves around the fact that our business website is not searchable... meaning it cannot be found on the web unless you know the company name and or web address in the first place. Now this has been on my mind for some time and until recently I didn't have the time to devote to it anyway so it didn't really bother me too much. Well, it did bother me, I just didn't lose sleep over it. Anyway, since my classes ended last week I've had some free time on my hands and I've generally been in a more ambitious mood so I've been reading up quite a bit on the concepts of SEO or search engine optimization.

What is SEO
The concept of SEO is all about crafting your website with the Googlers of the world in mind. Most sites, ours included, have been crafted in the interest of passing product and service information along to viewers and less about the drawing of the viewers in in the first place. This is a big deal. Consider this. Most people that know about our business know it by name and what we do. Because they know of us they have probably no need for our business or have already used it's services. If they meet either of these two qualifications then they already can find our site without or with little help from Google.

Take another situation for a spin. Let's say you are a budding bride living in San Diego and you've always wanted a local wedding on the beach. How would you find a videographer if you wanted one but didn't know of any off the top of your head? You would probably pop onto Google and type in some like 'San Diego Wedding Video' or something like that and go down the list one-by-one. Well, the people making these kinds of searches are the one's that actually need our services and they are actually the ones that have money to spend. These are the people we want to bring to the website and when they can't find it through Google then we're not going to be meeting these brides anytime soon.

This is my dilemma, I want people to find the site; so how do we go about making the site optimized for search? To try to answer that question I decided to try some experiments here on my blog based on some solid information I've picked up from around the web.

Search Optimization Experiment
This website, my blog, has traffic monitoring code built into it so that I can track who's visiting the site, how often, what pages they look at, and how they got here. Most sites have similar code working on them and it's there for good reason. It should help me decide how to drive more traffic to the site by simply analyzing what is coming in already.

According to my stats, my blog's most popular page is HCB 150 - I Want One! Over the past 13 days this page has been hit 19 times by random visitors via search engines. After recently reading a fair amount of literature on SEO, I'm going to see if I can get this page's traffic to go even higher through various techniques. If these techniques work I think I can then use some of the same techniques to start building up searchability within the Google system.

The post above is a post about the hands-free car speakerphone that I blogged about last Spring. I wanted it for two reason. First, because it was cool, and second, because California was legally going to require driver's to have a hands-free device to use a phone while driving. In the end I got one, though I only got the next model down, and I've enjoyed it but since then this post continues to drive more traffic than any other post on my blog... and I have nearly 400 posts on this bad boy.

Filtering my stats down further I can see that the most frequent method that people find this post is by Googling 'HCB 150 review'. If you Google this phrase you'll find that this post is in the number one position. However if you take 'review' off and try any other word combination I'm not anywhere to be found.

The reason for this can be attributable to any number of things but mostly it is probably due a few things. First, the page does not contain many other words that are related to phrases that people might search for when looking up this device. Second, the pictures on the page are not labeled with descriptive text in the 'alt' tags. And third, there is no webpage out there linking directly to this original post of mine. General SEO knowledge says that when pages link to something search engines place greater importance on the destination of the link. Additionally the words used for the link, otherwise known as the anchor text, correlate directly to the words used in the actual search box. Meaning if I want people to find my business website I should link to it not by saying 'click here'. I should say: view my San Diego Wedding Video business website; you won't be disappointed. :)

So aside from plugging my business I will take some time in this post to plug my most popular webpage on this site with an anchored link of descriptive key words. Click through to take a look at the Hands Free Bluetooth Car Speakerphone that I wanted to buy last Spring, which also happens to be the most popular webpage on my blog.

When on the page you'll also notice that I expanded the post a bit today (what, you don't remember what it looked like originally?) to include more related text that people might search for, heading tags around headings, as well as an actual (albeit small) review of the device, which was never actually on the page in the first place. Ironic, I know.

To state my goal here one more time, I'll say that this is an experiment so we'll see how this works out. The last 13 days this page got 19 hits through Google so over then 13 days we'll see if the number goes up. I guess I'll check back in again on this topic on around the 25th of May. See you then!

Mr and Mrs Arend Hermsen

/ Sunday, April 26, 2009 /
I guess technically it's after midnight and today is now tomorrow but ignoring that fact Aaron and I went today to Sycuan Resort out in East County to film / enjoy my old friend Arend Hermsen's wedding. Ironically he married Aaron's former coworker Carrie Stone (whom I've also become friends with over the past couple years) though there was no prior knowledge of the friend of friend situation. To my great pleasure Flor also came out about an hour after Aaron and I arrived to enjoy the wedding too; it was great having her there.

Weddings these day's seem a little different to me than they did not too long ago. Since Flor and I married I now think about us whenever I watch a wedding ceremony. I think about what I was feeling and thinking during each significant event during the day. It makes me smile. Anyway, the wedding was very nice, the location and weather were perfect and the food was good. I just wish I was able to enjoy the party a bit more than I did... having to wield a camcorder kind of wipes you out.

Congratulations my old bowling friend!

Family Website Projects Are Fun

/ Wednesday, July 2, 2008 /
I've been really enjoying myself lately as I've been learning a lot of CSS and HTML web design skills. If any of my routine readers have taken note of this site's re-design over the last few weeks you can obviously see what I'm talking about. It's almost hard to beleive that this site is hosted from Blogger for no money whatsoever as it looks nothing like blogger at all. It's funny, I have a domain name brianmounts.com but I haven't associated it with this site because it's actually registered to my good friend and wedding photographer Aaron Riveroll. Maybe one day we'll transfer the domain to my name and then maybe I'll use it for this site.

Anyhow, the purpose of this post is just to make mention of a project that I started casually working on last fall, in which I have since re-worked it over the past few weeks and am so pleased with overall. My dad, as many close readers know, is a pastor in the Nazarene Church and he has been dabbling with starting a website for a while now as an additional outlet for his ministry. Funny thing is that my dad is still learning to use the computer so I've been handling the setup of the site and the design aspects of it. My dad puts the content together like nobody else could and I make it look good. Obviously my goal is to slowly and continuously teach my dad how to make the site look good himself so that I personally have less editing to do but for now I'm perfectly happy helping him out any way I can.

If you wanted to head over and check out my Dad's prayer blog and marvel at my site design abilities (which by the way was really just a modification of someone else's site design) then I'd appreciate your thoughts in return. I'm sure my dad would appreciate some feedback on his content as well as this is a new medium for him and he's still learning how to keep a blog.

Coincidentally, I just learned that my cousin Jess is learning a little web design for a class she's taking so I'm interested in taking a look at her creations when they go live.

Sorting Out Old Computer Files And Found This Gem

How about a bit of that old Matrix Pops video? Those were good times at Loma. I forgot I had this file even though it's been incorporated into a few other videos. In my time at Loma on the campus network this one video circulated the network pretty good. I was proud of it. :) Enjoy it if you haven't seen it before.

I Am A Culinary Genius

/ Tuesday, August 14, 2007 /
So Saturday afternoon Flor and I were loafing around the apartment watching TV and relaxing. We were feeling pretty good about staying in all day when I suddenly got the urge to bake some cookies. Now, if you know anything about me you'll know already that I have a love affair with baked goods and cookies rank high on my "baked goods list". I don't use those nasty box mixes either I build those cookies straight from scratch.

Anyway to prohibit myself from droning on about this too long I'll just summarize from hence forth. The cookies ended up coming out of the oven in perfect condition. Quite soft but not gooey, fluffy but not towering too high, chocolaty but still leaving plenty of the doughy goodness to savor between chips. Let's just say they were perfect and they looked gorgeous!

Aaron even thought so too and later that evening after he had finished his photo shoot for the day he set up his indoor studio and took some awe inspiring shots of my cookies, catching them in all their glory.

I now present them to you with one disclaimer. There are no more cookies left. Jeremy, Aaron, AJ, Rich, Flor, and Myself killed them off by yesterday evening. Sorry to tease your sweet tooth and then leave you wanting more but some things must be the way they are.

For more of Aaron's ridiculously good photography check out his blog and portfolio. He usually photographs beautiful women but sometimes he takes a break to photograph my food.

Photography, Videos, and Directing The Sun

/ Tuesday, July 24, 2007 /
I try to keep myself busy. Lately I've found that I'm finding it a lot less enjoyable to just sit around the house watching TV or something of the like. As many of my friends and family can attest I have immersed myself into many other things such as a girl friend, a full time job, an awful lot of bowling, a lot of traveling, I've even had some stints of dancing thrown into the mix as well as my trip back to school this past winter to finish up my long overdue undergraduate degree (which I got by the way). I've also spent a lot of time with my business partner, friend, and roommate Aaron to do video projects for schools, musicians, churches, and weddings. But not only that but I help Aaron out with his photography business which is sort of a subdivision of NGS Media our San Diego wedding video company. What do I do in this position you might ask?

I direct the sun! I am the official NGS Director Of The Sun. I cause the sun shed light wherever Aaron needs it. :) Pretty cool huh?

This past weekend I helped Aaron photograph a model for the calendar he's working on. It's a fund raiser to benefit breast cancer awareness and the 3-Day. Here is a quality shot Aaron got of me while on the job. Just look at me! Who else could look that good while directing sun? No one.

Weekend Update and a Bad Bowling Excursion

/ Wednesday, March 14, 2007 /
This past weekend was a weekend that contained a few first for me along with some entertaining moments, tragedy, and peaceful relaxation. First of all Aaron and I went out Saturday afternoon to Balboa Park and spent the day with another Nice Guy, Daniel Harrison and his fiance. We took their engagement photos and generally had a great time. Aaron tells me the photos came out great but I haven't seen more than just a few. Attached to the right is one of the pictures from the day that I've seen. I just ripped it straight from Aaron's public gallery.

Later on we picked up Flor and we all headed out to Casa de Pico for an evening of drinks and dinning. I had my very first Bloody Mary and I liked it as I am a big fan of Tomato Juice. We had a great time and I am happy to finally say that I know Channin. Until this weekend I had never met Danny's finance and I was starting to wonder if she was a real person. :)

After the evening festivities Flor and I met up with the Tragers for a first for me. We all went out to the drive-in theatre and watch 300. It was an incredible movie; a delight even. Probably the most artistic war movie I've ever seen and beautiful. The drive-in experience was pretty amazing too. I really enjoyed it but the next time I take Flor out there I will insist on coming in our own car as we were very cramped in the back seat for a long time. It's tough on your back! Regardless we did have a good time as always with the Tragers.

Sunday morning I got up really early (on daylight savings morning too, ugh!) and drove up to Mira Mesa Bowl in North San Diego with Flor. I bowled in the annual San Diego USBC Masters Tournament. Flor manned the camcorder for the trip but luckily for me the camera battery was almost dead so she wasn't able to film more than 3 frames. Why is this lucky you may ask. It's because I bowled about as bad as I've ever bowled before. The three frames she captured can be found in the below video and as you'll notice I didn't get a strike in any of the frames and I left two splits. This pretty much summed up the entire day. I shot a -230 for 6 games or a 161 average. Yes the shot was tough but frankly I just stunk and have no excuse.

Anyway, after getting that awful bowling behind me I made the same conclusion I always come to after an outing like this. I decide to quit bowling for good. Of course a couple hours later I was already thinking about my next bowling event so at least I can say I get over my problems quickly. :)

The rest of the day Flor and I relaxed at home. She studied while I played CIV IV. Man, I love that game! All in all this was a nice relaxing conclusion to an exciting weekend filled with many events. And that was my weekend update, it was an enjoyable experience spent with an array of good fiends. I can even now say that Danny's fiance Channin actually exists. :0 Until next time...

Another funny video from my past...

OK, so I don't know how I missed it but my good friend Aaron posted yest another NGS Fact Finding Mission a few weeks ago and it slipped right passed me until today. This video happens to be on Mother's Day 2005... unfortunately my mom only gets a cameo appearance as does my dad and my other friend AJ but we all ate at a Japanese grill. Fun times.

My First Survivor Application Video

/ Friday, January 19, 2007 /
Since I just added the video for my second application video to Survivor I thought I'd go ahead and post my first Survivor application video. This video was also fimed and edited by my good friend, roommate, and lead editor for NGS Media, Aaron Riveroll. It features clips for long ago mixed with clips filmed specifically for the application. This video adhears to Survivors requirements that videos not be more than 3 minutes long. I just can't understand why they didn't pick me for the show. Enjoy.

20 Questions With Brian Mounts

/ Thursday, January 18, 2007 /
I've been diligently working on nothing of consequence this evening, mostly cleaning up my hard drive and farting around online but I did come across this old Survivor application video that my roommate Aaron from the Nice Guy Society & NGS Media made for me. In the video my old roommate Josh posed many different questions which I half-comically answered. Anyway, this video was fun to make and is a good representation of me... in a weird sort of way and it is a great memory from my not to distant past. Enjoy.

Post Christmas Swell...

/ Tuesday, December 27, 2005 /
In case you don't know already I will be moving away from Pt. Loma this week. Tonight I sign my new rental agreement with Racqut Club Luxury Apartments located in La Mesa, CA. I've spent the last 7 and a half years in Pt. Loma and it pains me a little to move away but at the same time it is time to move on. Obviously La Mesa is not that far away (only 15 minutes) but regardless it's quite a setp away from the beach and my college days at PLNU.

I will be once again moving in with a fellow nice guy, Mr. Riveroll, and for the first time a fellow honorary nice guy, Mr. Saddler. This should be a fine time in our lives and we should have much fun living with each other. NGS West meets NGS East.

Well aside from the move it looks like I'm going to be looking to do something for New Years. For years now I've done next to nothing for the holiday and this year I just can't accept doing nothing as an option. I want to have a little fun. Some friends are heading out to Vegas for the weekend, I might join them. I've also got another friend hitting up disneyland for the day, I might join him. I might also entertain a couple other options. I guess I need to decide soon. The weekend is only a few days away.

OK, so I'm not very entertaining in my writing today. I guess I've got very little to talk about oher than basic what's going on in my life news so I'll just bring this to a close and say that I'm 27 years away from retirment. Ahh, can't wait.

US Open Fundraiser Update: I come back from Christmas to find myself with new investors. I'm up to $210 in investments into my fund. I hope you'll take the time to pass this investment opportunity to those that might be interested. I need to raise an additional $790 over the next 4 weeks. I can't wait to fly out and show off. ...and thanks to those that have invested so far.

Dog Days of Summer Have Come to an End

/ Wednesday, August 31, 2005 /
What a week it has been. Last week I took Friday off for vacation and went to Vegas with the NGS. We had a great time; I bowled, we enjoyed ourselves on the strip, took in a hypnosis show, etc, etc. I'll leave you to your imagination... just keep it clean. Anyway, we got back Sunday afternoon and I began preparing myslef for the next couple days. Monday night and Tuesday night I spent time with my folks first watching the Pads play the D-Backs at PetCo, it was a lot of fun but it was of course only a warmup for last nights game in Anaheim. Last night my beloved A's took on the Angels in a pivital game and and series for the two teams battling for firsty place. Amazingly enough both teams had their aces on the mond, Zito for the A's and Colon for the Angels. It was a beautiful game, probably the best game I've ever seen in person. I was on the edge of my seat and loved it from start to finish. Anyway, here's a link to the recap. Apparently this game touched the lives of many people... and probably most of all A's fans nation wide. We won after all 2 to 1 in 11 innings. If only they were all this good.

27 Years of Marriage

/ Thursday, July 7, 2005 /
Tomorrow just happens to be my parents 27th wedding anniversary. Having just turned 25 it dawns on me that my dad had already met my mother while he was 24, dated her at 25 and while dating proposed 3 times before the engagement, and finally married soon after turning 26. I am struck by the idea that as long as I have lived is as long as it took my dad to find my mom, which also happens to be just shy of the length of time they've actually been together. Now of course this is all "fuzzy math" but it's amazing to think that I'm an adult now. I'm old enough to be doing the same thing. Wow.

Anyway, 27 years is mighty fine and I wish to my folks another fine 27 years to come. I only hope to share an equally fine 27 years with someone someday.

UPDATE: It happened. I got engaged in August of 2007 and married December 16 of that year.

In other news I have moved apartments. I now live in the same building that I've lievd in for the last 34 months but now live on the second floor in apt. 19. I now have a porch and it is quite lovely. My two roommates and I have decided to be very clean in this new dwelling what with new carpet and linoleum but in the past week I am the only one of us to have done any cleaning whatsoever. Lets hope that this trend will not last. As much as I enjoy the company and friendship of my two Palermo Terrace partners in rent I'm tired of being the only one doing anything around the place. We shall see how the night goes.

Lastly I wil say that the Nice Guy Society has now officially become Nice Guy Society, Inc., need I say more?

-They call me Mr. Nippleicious
