Extreme Vocal Depth

/ Saturday, March 28, 2009 /
I happened to come down with a cold a few days back and as a result my voice decided to drop about an octave and a half... it's crazy! My voice typically drops during a cold but this is so extreme that I figured it was worth a blog post. Please forgive my nerdery and do compare to reigning vocal depth champion JD Sumner. Enjoy!!!

Book Review: Robinson Crusoe by Daniel Defoe

/ /

robinson_crusoeNot too long ago, about two weeks ago or so, just before Flor and I headed off to Vegas, I finished up my copy of Robinson Crusoe on audio book.  I found this classic novel to be quite interesting but I never found it riveting by any means.  This is probably why it took me upwards of six months to go through it from beginning to end.  I did listen to parts of the book twice however because every now and then I’d let it sit dormant for a month or so and would need to refresh my memory as to what was happening in the story.

Anyway, the story is about a man who heads out to sea and has some problems.  He eventually finds himself shipwrecked on a deserted yet fruitful island and he makes his life bountiful over the course of a few decades.  The island not only sustains him but brings him to god, inspires a sense of purpose in his wandering, aimless life, and eventually brings him great wealth and friendship.

Of course the most interesting part of the book for me was sprinkled throughout the story from beginning to end.  It was the discourse on Robinson’s methods behind creating a comfortable life for himself.  It was in the descriptions of how he cultivated the land, bred livestock, made bread, butter, and other processed foods, goods, and wares, and how he managed to replicate most every kind of common luxury of the times with the things he had around him.  Very interesting indeed.

Of course it took me a long time to finish the book up so I was constantly losing drive to hear more but it was never boring so in that regard I would place the book, classic as it is, near the bottom of my ‘to read again’ pile… but I would definitely watch the movie it it were to ever come to the drive-in. :)

Shave and a Haircut

/ Tuesday, March 24, 2009 /

Last week was a fine week of vacation for me and my lovely wife. We both enjoyed a much needed time of relaxation and care-free leisure. Of course I’ve already blogged a bit about the first day of our trip in Vegas and my bowling exploits but before I finish that epic up I thought I’d offer a little tidbit from the beginning of the trip (my dramatic haircut) and a tidbit from the middle of the trip (my dramatic shave).

Those that know me could probably remember the days when my hair wasn’t so long. A few years back my hair was quite short and then one day this girl told me she liked guys with long hair. Needless to say the past three years my hair has been long… but at least I got the girl. :) Not so anymore as on Friday the 13th I decided finally to hack it back to what it was a few years back: Proper. Ohh, and it feels so good too.

Flor of course was very supportive of the move (despite her liking men with hair) and later in the week she decided that I needed to complement the new do with a fine shave. She purchased me a wonderful facial, shave, and scalp massage while on our cruise this past weekend. Now, I’ve been shaved before but not by someone else. It was so weird having someone else holding a blade to my neck. Anyway, I thought I’d share my post-haircut / pre-shave picture followed by my post-shave pic. Then feel free to check out my fantastic commentary on the shave last Friday evening the 20th.

Test Post from Windows Live Writer

/ Friday, March 13, 2009 /

This evening I just downloaded Windows Live Writer as it has been highly touted on the web to be a fantastic tool for blogging.  Seeing as though I write a fair amount online I figured I’d give it a try.  Funny thing about this post however is that I’m not going into detail on any of the wonderful things I’d like to say here on my blog.  For instance I’m going on vacation next week and will be visiting Vegas, USBC Nationals, In-Laws, and taking a weekend cruise with the wife.  I also am working on an asset allocation model for my retirement accounts that I would like to document here on this blog.  I also finished another book which I’d like to review and I’m contemplating changing my methodology for tracking my monthly stock selections.  All of these will take up complete posts on their own in the coming days… at least hopefully but until then I guess this will have to do as a test post and glimpse into the future.  Now, I guess I’ll see about testing some of the media functionality of the program… please bear with me.

We're Staying at Caesars Palace!
Not too long ago I Mentioned I was finishing up my MBA.  Well I’d like to say I am that much closer, just 7 1/2 weeks to go!  I can’t wait.  I’ll have to start working on my big final paper for class ten however in Vegas.  Not good timing at all if you ask me.  This is not a place to be doing school work…

Anyway, that’s all I’m going to say right now.  It’s late and I have to go to bed.  I’ll play with this more tomorrow.  Good night Windows Live Writer and good night blog.
