Wouldn't voting be more accurate if...?

/ Tuesday, November 8, 2005 /
I voted this evening. I have no idea where the polls were sitting when I went nor do I know where things stand currently. I also noticed that as I walked into my polling station at 7:45pm I felt that my vote counted simply because I didn't know which, if any, propositions or people were winning or losing. Last year in the presidential elections I knew well before I walked into my polling station which candidate was going to win California. I still went and voted but it didn't feel like my vote counted. This struck me as I walked back to my residence from the polls: What if it were illegal to conduct exit polling or for the media of all sizes and varieties to discuss voting results before all polling places were closed. Would we have more turnout because everyone would have to assume a reletively close race... would we have more accurate results? If I knew ALL of my votes would be overturned because they were trailing in the polls why would I go... this of course would lead to an even larger margin of defeat, so I go, but how many others won't vote if they know they will lose? I bet we would have more voting and more accuracy. In fact what if you weren't allowed to conduct preliminary polls... how would we know which candidate would be the one getting 2% of the vote... you know, the guy that so many people like but won't vote for because no one will vote for him because he won't win because no one will vote for him for no good reason. Wouldn't voting results be more accurate if we all learned of all candidates, measures, and propositions but not of preliminary poll information?

In other news I had an epiphony this evening regarding adjusting to early roll on house patterns vs. pro patterns.

A Productive Day

/ Sunday, November 6, 2005 /
Well, so far it's been a productive day. I finally did a little update to my website. I always feel overwhelmed going into it and trying to change things but often times surprise myself when I find I can do more than I think. Anyway, not only that but I opened and configured myself my new permanent email address and sent out a mass email to notify friends and family. I wish I could just magically send to everyone but I know I missed many people and got some returned "delivery failures" so if you didn't get the info go to my site and send me an email through the built in portal on the front page.

In further news I attended the annual roughly Halloween party at Schoeler's (sp) house last night. I saw a lot of friends that I've come to realize I don't see very often anymore. I miss them (you if you're reading this) and hope that we can bump paths more often. Anyway I watched the weekly PBA telecast this morning and have some deep thoughts regarding my current bowling game, strategic planning, and execution. Check them out if interested at Mounts Bowling.

Finally, I've got two new roommates lined up for December, however, either one (or god-forbid both) could fall through in the coming weeks so if any of you know someone that needs a room or roommate soon please send them my way. That's it for me. Maybe a more entertaining post will have to come in the near future. –Mounts

Civ 4 and Sock 3

/ Friday, November 4, 2005 /
Alright so I’ve got a weird story for you. Two nights ago I found myself delightfully immersed in my new computer game: Civ 4 . Now if you know nothing of the Civ series of games you should know that it is a turn based game that plays for a long time based on the size of your game. Also, being a turn based game you’ve got certain “plans” in the works at various stages of each turn. Some plans are in beginning stages, some are in the middle, and some are concluding. There is always some plan that you’ve decided on concluding at all times. This creates an atmosphere of addiction. Every time you decide you want to quit you say to yourself just one more turn. I’ll finish this one thing and then shut it off but once you finish that one thing you find that there is just one more thing to finish and then the pattern forms and your left saying to yourself “just one more turn” over and over and over for hours.

Anyway, after playing until 3:50am and finally turning it off for bed, I slunk into my room and began peeling cloths off at the side of my bed. I threw my shirt on the ground then my pants on top of my shirt and then my socks on top of my pants and then fell fast asleep. Five hours later I woke up and flopped my legs over the side of my bed. I was late getting up so I just reached down to put on my clothes from yesterday when I reached for my socks and found the most astonishing thing imaginable. Sitting squarely on top of my pants were three socks. That’s right three. In a mere five hours two socks on my feet transformed into three socks on my pants. I sat there very confused and finally decided to shrug it off. I put two of them back on, got dressed, and went about my day. Now, a full day later I still have no explanation for where the third sock came from but I figure it certainly makes for entertaining banter.
